Among the foremost self-trained visionary artists of the American South, Lonnie Holley’s music defies all notion of traditional song form, and taps deeply into the same wellspring of innate creativity that informs his visual work. Through four decades of multimedia work, Holley’s practice has been described as a “narrative retelling of Black American history,” celebrating the successes of the Civil Rights movement and commenting upon the struggle that remains.
Holley’s live performance at the Orange Show World HQ is the culmination of his three-day residency at the Orange Show Center for Visionary Art, where he has worked with emerging artists and students across the city to create sculptural pieces that will serve as the backdrop for his show.
