Dallas weekends are packed full of events, but how many of them are truly worthy of your time? PaperCity‘s new events calendar offers a curated look at all of the best things to do in the area. But everyone can still use an expert.
PaperCity‘s Weekend Expert Megan Ziots culls our calendar for your must dos in this regular weekly series. This weekend, we’ve got lots of concerts and comedy, a watermelon festival, and dance lessons.
Major Dallas Concerts
Blink-182 & Lil Wayne have teamed up for an epic North American Tour. They’ll be stopping in Dallas this Friday, August 2 at 7:30 pm. The rocker and rap band will be performing at Dos Equis Pavilion and accompanied by Welsh pop punk band Neck Deep.
Supporting Blink’s eighth studio album Nine and Wayne’s Tha Carter V, the co-headlining tour goes through September. Their mash-up of “What’s My Age Again?” and “A Milli” kicked things off in May.

Another rapper coming to Dos Equis the next day is Wiz Khalifa. He’ll be in Dallas on Saturday, August 3 at 6 pm on The Decent Exposure Tour. The lineup also includes French Montana, Moneybagg Yo, Chevy Woods and DJ Drama.

After the show, Khalifa is set to appear at Theory Nightclub in Uptown at 10 pm. Tickets for the Taylor Gang Takeover are available here.

As for what’s going on over at Toyota Music Factory this weekend, Sublime With Rome is taking the stage on Sunday, August 4 at 6 pm. This will be the reggae rock/alternative band’s sixth tour to celebrate their third studio album Blessings. Michael Franti & Spearhead, Commons Kings and Seranation will open for the group.

This one isn’t technically on the weekend, but it’s on Thursday so close enough. Carly Rae Jepsen will perform at House of Blues on her The Dedicated Tour. The show starts at 8 pm and $1 from every ticket will go to support Crisis Text Line. The Canadian singer is best known for her catchy 2012 hit “Call Me Maybe” and is currently promoting her most recent album Dedicated.

Lastly, for EDM fans, Diplo will be performing at Stereo Live Dallas on Friday. The show starts at 10 pm and tickets are available on Eventbrite for $99, plus fees and tax. Hey, he’s a popular guy. Wes Pentz’s most well-known collabs include “Close To Me” with Ellie Goulding, “Electricity” with Dua Lipa, and his “Old Town Road” remix.

Dallas Comedy
Scottish comedian Daniel Sloss is coming to Majestic Theatre on Friday at 7 pm. He started comedy at the age of 16 and was the youngest comedian to perform solo in London’s West End at age 19. Sloss has appeared many times on Conan and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson.

His most recent comedy specials released on Netflix in 2018 called “DARK” and “Jigsaw.” Candid observational comedy is Sloss’ style and his most recent stand-up special “Daniel Sloss: NOW” was filmed at The Paramount Theatre in Austin.

Silicon Valley star Jimmy O. Yang is making appearances at Addison Improv this Friday and Saturday. The actor, stand-up comedian and writer can also be seen in Patriot’s Day, Crazy Rich Asians, and 2 Broke Girls. His first stand-up appearance was on The Arsenio Hall Show.
He’s also written a book called How To American: An Immigrant’s Guide to Disappointing Your Parents. A jack of all trades, you can catch Yang on Friday at 7:30 pm or 9:45 pm or Saturday at 7 pm or 9:30 pm.

Watermelon Festival
Head over to the Dallas Farmers Market this Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm. The 2nd Annual Watermelon Festival will include 10 varieties of Texas grown watermelon to try. Heavy hitters include Sugar Babies, Truck Busters, Summer Gold and more. There will also be watermelon eating contests, watermelon bowling, seed spitting contests, live music, demos, family-friendly activities and tastings.

Dallas Blonde Birthday Bash
Celebrate Deep Ellum Brewing Company’s favorite Dallas Blonde on its 7th birthday. The event takes place at Katy Trail Ice House on Friday from 5 pm to 9 pm. There will new Deep Ellum Brewing swag, and Dallas Blonde schooners and Queen of Beers pint glasses with the purchase of any Deep Ellum beer if you get there early.

Swing Dance Lessons
Revelers Hall in Bishop Arts is hosting its first ever swing dance lessons on Sunday evening. From 5 pm to 6 pm, take the intro to swing dancing class hosted by Amanda Hobbs and Will Dooley. It costs $5 per a person and all you have to bring is yourself, no partner is necessary
This way you’ll be prepared to dance your socks off at the next jazz night at the venue.
