Hollywood Heartthrob Surprises Houston Firefighters With Drop In Visits: Matthew McConaughey Spreads the Love to Hurricane Harvey Heroes
BY Annie Gallay // 10.30.18Matthew McConaughey visited a Houston fire department first.
This National First Responders Day, Matthew McConaughey put Houston first. The Texas native and drawling-dreamboat-turned-Oscar-winning-actor surprised the first responders of Space City with a whirlwind trip of photo opps, handshakes and catered turkey lunches on Sunday.
We can all agree McConaughey’s name is hard to spell — and that he did an amazing job spelling out his love for the Bayou City.
McConaughey commended Houston police officers, firefighters, 911 operators and ER doctors and nurses for their bravery during Hurricane Harvey relief. He started at a fire station before visiting other facilities. The movie star shared a video statement outside of Houston Fire Station 26.
The Hollywood favorite could certainly hold a seminar on How to Win Over a City in 10 days. But really, one day would be more than enough.
“I’m Texas born and raised, so acknowledging the hard work and dedication of first responders in Houston is meaningful to me personally. Over the past year alone with the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, the Carolinas and Florida and the fires in California, the number of heroic men and women on the front lines of natural disasters is staggering,” he said in the statement, which was shared on Facebook.
“I am glad to make it to Houston to recognize how important these folks are and I am proud to work with Wild Turkey, who is making first responders a key focus of its Wild Turkey Gives Back campaign for 2018.”
The Lincoln Lawyer is the creative director and spokesman of the whiskey brand. He also said that Wild Turkey donated money to Team Rubicon. The organization helps train Veterans to become first responders.
We’ve seen McConaughey showboating in Wolf of Wall Street and shirtless in Magic Mike. But now, some lucky Houstonians have seen his soft side firsthand.
McConaughey also met with Mayor Sylvester Turner, who thanked him for never forgetting his Texas ties.
Turner tweeted a handful of heartwarming photos and the message “Matthew @McConaughey teamed up with @WildTurkey to give back to Houston’s heroes. Honored to welcome him to our city and thank him for spending time and recognizing our @houstonpolice, @HoustonFire, and 911 dispatchers for their service.”
There’s only one thing to say to someone so committed to making Houston strong.
Alright, alright, alright.
