Best Day Trips From Dallas: 5 Great Escapes From the City More Than Worth the Drive

BY // 06.07.18

Want to escape Dallas for a few hours? Sneak in a day trip or two this summer and get to know some of Texas’ most underrated spots. Whether you’re seeking the great outdoors, historic towns, one-of-a-kind shopping, or simply a body of water to swim in, there are plenty of great getaways within 100 miles of Dallas.

Here are the five best Dallas day trips:

Waco

Only a few years ago, the most remarkable things in Waco were a dangerous traffic circle, Baylor University and Health Camp (if you know, you know). That was before the phenomenon that is Fixer Upper suddenly transformed the small college town into a trendy tourist destination.

The Waco of today is a different scene. Take the hour-and-a-half drive to check out Joanna and Chip’s incredibly popular Magnolia Market at the Silos (a complex offering shopping, dining and family fun), charming shops and restaurants on Austin Avenue, the Dr. Pepper Museum and the historic Hippodrome Theater.

Glen Rose

You’ve seen the larger-than-life skeletons at The Perot Museum, now it’s time to see where the dinosaurs roamed. Head to Dinosaur Valley State Park outside of Glen Rose (about 90 miles from Dallas) to play archaeologist for the day. The scenic park offers hiking trails, mountain bike trails, wildlife watching, and swimming and fishing in the Paluxy River.

The best part? You can find the ancient beasts’ gigantic footprints fossilized in the riverbed.

Pilot Point

This hidden gem in Denton County is the perfect antidote to a boring summer weekend, and it’s only about 50 miles from Dallas. Start your day by checking out the Farmer’s and Merchant’s gallery, a collection of art and antiques housed in a former bank building, which you may recognize from Bonnie & Clyde.

Next, cool off at one of Lake Ray Roberts’ swimming areas. If it’s Saturday, head over to Western Son Distillery for a tour and tasting. Finally, taste a fried pie at Old West Coffee Cafe – a cute little spot in Pilot Point town square.

McKinney

If you’re seeking unique shopping, great food, fun activities and a small town-chic vibe, look no further than McKinney. Just over half an hour from Dallas, the city is an easy and worthwhile getaway. For shopping, check out 540 Mercantile, SOHO McKinney, Antique House and The Groovy Coop.

For good eats, try Patina Green Home and Market, Harvest Seasonal Kitchen, Butcher Board, or Hutchins BBQ. If you’re there on the second Saturday of the month, hang around into the evening and enjoy live music and art events at Downtown McKinney’s Second Saturday celebration.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Need a taste of the great outdoors without getting too far from home? Lake Mineral Wells State Park offers lovely hiking trails, swimming, fishing, boats for rent and it’s one of few places near Dallas with natural rock climbing. Stop off in town and grab a bite to eat at Brazos Market & Bistro, The Black Horse Cafe, or Taqueria La Estrella.
