What: The annual FlyingHorse fundraiser benefitting Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts
Where: One Arts Plaza & Montgomery Arts Theater on the Booker T. campus
PC Moment: After a two-year hiatus due to Covid-19, the annual event was held on campus on the evening of April 22. It featured history-rich moments in celebration of 100 years of the school including a video explaining the development of the arts magnet over the years.
Together, the community once again stood in support of Booker T., honoring the past and present while generously helping to net and return nearly $285,000 into the school. Proceeds are used to address the needs of the faculty and student body, which can range from toe shoes to private lessons, from summer intensives to new instruments, or from college visits to a violin bow.
Guests experienced a mind-blowing, heart-melting production showcasing and celebrating the student talent – and co-chairs Rosie Roberson and Abraham Alexander provided each guest with a curated playlist in honor of the night – audible with a gift of earbuds from Main Stage Sponsor Amazon. Booker T. alumni fame (to name a few: Norah Jones, Edie Brickell, and Erykah Badu) were given an electric nod from current students – and the house was full of laughs from a video of an almost frame by frame rendition of The Breakfast Club.
A star host committee lineup including Sheryl Maas, Jenny Esping Kirtland, Brian Bolke, Keenan Walker, Missy Peck, Sharon Young, Lindsey Collins, Madison Strode, Morgan Cox, Sami Abboud, Lisa Moore, Meghan Looney, Tara Lewis, Pete Lerma, Jeny Bania and Jonathan Merla were all wowed and left with a Booker T. pep in their step—and upon both entry and exit, class of 2020 Booker T. alumni and star DJ Amarji King put an exclamation point on the night with tunes right outside of the Montgomery Arts Theatre.
