What: Master of the Lyford Cay Design Aesthetic, Amanda Lindroth: Salon Talk, Morning Mimosas and Book Signing

Where: Sherle Wagner showroom

Who: Designer Amanda Lindroth (Bahamas, Palm Beach and Charleston)

High Point: Over champagne cocktails, Amanda Lindroth told stories of growing up in South Florida — picture Slim Aarons’ iconic photographs of the leisure class. The next time I hold a seashell up to my ear, I hope to hear not the ocean, but Amanda’s voice, as she is all things that entail oceanside island living. Her recently published book, Island Dreaming: Amanda Lindroth Design (Vendome) features 20 recent projects, from cozy cottages to grand houses in Lyford Cay, New Providence in the Bahamas, and Baker’s Bay on Great Guana Cay in the Abacos, as well as The Dunmore hotel on Harbour Island; the Bahamas hideaway The Potlatch Club; and The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection hotel on Johns Island on the Kiawah River.

Takeaway: If you dream of the houses in Lyford Cay and Harbour Island with a splash of Palm Beach, it’s Amanda you’re dreaming of.

Spotted: Sherle Wagner’s Melanie Turner, Jane Talley Hodges, Nazira Handal, Lance Scott, Charlotte Carr, Will Massie, Lindsey Stone, Amber Perley, Ed Hill, Scott Cook, Jennifer Clarke, Holland Wiles, Andrew Young, Chad Ham, Elaina Fagan Darden, Ginger Hartford, Ellie Hamm, Abby Weigand, Barrett Dyke, Christy Doramus, Christy Pederson, Addison Greene, Katie Pearson, Hannah White, and Shawna Kuykendall. What: The Fifth and Sixth Generations of the Legendary Gracie Wallpaper Family Unveil a Stunning Book — Salon Talk, Cocktails, and Book Signing

Where: Laura Lee Clark showroom

Who: Mike Gracie, Jenn Gracie, and Zach Shea, with a book signing of The Art of Gracie (Rizzoli)

High Point: Simply put, this is the wallpaper to the stars (and true connoisseurs of heritage wallcoverings). With prices not for the faint of heart, Gracie has a cult-like global fan base. Founded more than 125 years ago (1898, to be exact) by James Gracie, it has been lovingly steered by six generations. The images shown at the salon talk included charming family portraits spanning decades. An interesting anecdote shared by the progeny was that the wallpaper designs depicted in black-and-white photography from the archives could have been difficult to reinterpret, but thankfully their grandfather would note on the photos: “This was blue.” The lesson in history was also a reminder that wallcoverings were actually utilitarian, since they were insulation — to which Mike Gracie said, “Home Depot take note — insulation used to be pretty.”

Takeaway: Gracie prices have risen a bit since the days when an invoice was sent to famed interior designer from the early 20th century, Elsie de Wolfe: 200 panels for $200.

Spotted: Julian Chichester in from London, Janet Gridley, Andrew Gonzales, David and Ann Sutherland, Ellett Miciotto, Rupal Dalal, Sara See, Adriana Juarez, Bryan Yates, Billye Turner, John Bobbitt, Stephen Karlisch, Kara Goss, Pete West, Will Massie, Taylor Espinoza, Nancy Markham, Melanie Turner, Laura McElroy, Elise Rucker, Marie Weit, Eduardo Garcia, Krystal Hunter, and Donna RihaBilly Fong

What: Morning Mimosas and Salon Talk: Is it Time to Cross Over to Restaurant and Hotel Design — The Journey

Takeaway: Jean Liu: “My approach — creating comfortable luxury, layered interiors that are functional and can evolve.” • “Practical advice: “Always have a backup option available, in case a component of the design does not show up on time.” • “My goal: Visitors should feel transported. And I like to create play lists, to make a total experience.” • “Office projects now feel more like residences — with kitchens, gyms, mediation spaces, and even pickleball courts.”

Elizabeth Bolognino: “It’s about adding a little bit of magic. How do we make someone feel. A commercial space should feel special, like a home. Come up with a narrative.” • “Accessories play a big part in the experience. You have to trust that they’ll not be taken.”

Jordan Winston: “I like to develop a story for a commercial client.” • “A reward for our work: being able to enjoy the space we create when we visit that particular restaurant or place.”

Takeaway: Josh Young: “I’m often asked what is most important when grouping and curating pieces for a room. The answer is always the same: form. Whether I’m painting or designing an interior, I consider how forms, lines, and silhouettes interact.”

Doniphan Moore: “Sourcing art can be an incredible experience with a client. It makes the space — without it, an interior is lifeless.”

Gonzalo Bueno: “I like to grow together with a client, to feel like I’m taking them on a journey. Visiting art galleries is part of that relationship.”

To end the lively discussion, all had participated in past Kips Bay show houses and gave guests tips on navigating that design adventure with its short turnaround schedule.
