Dirk Nowitzki Gets the Ultimate Dallas Honor — Soon You’ll be Able to Drive On Him

It's Dirk's Town, and Soon Dirk's Street

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki may be retired now, but his immense legacy will live on forever. A spot in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame is a given in the future. But first, Nowitzki will get his own Dallas street.

Olive Street, near the American Airlines Center, will be renamed Nowitzki Way if things go as planned.

The renaming proposal comes from city councilman Adam Medrano, who represents District 2 (Victory Park). Medrano submitted a proposal to rename three blocks of Olive Street, between Field Street and Victory Avenue. He chose this specific part because it’s right in front of the American Airlines Center, home of the Dallas Mavericks.

“The idea for the street name change came to Medrano when he was attending a conference in Phoenix in 2018,” reports Mavs Moneyball. “While traveling through downtown near Talking Stick Resort Arena, where both the Suns and Mercury play, one of the street names caught his attention. The street was named after Diana Taurasi, his favorite women’s basketball player.”

Once Nowitzki’s retirement was finally official, the idea was brought up to Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. Obviously, Cuban was down for it. There is still a waiting game for the actual installation of the new street signs though. The proposal has to go through the City Planning Commission to be voted on, then to the City Council for final approval.

That doesn’t seem like it’ll be a problem. The Big German is one of the most lovable figures in Dallas and deserves a proper salute.

And if you want to see Dirk play sports again, he’s hosting his annual charity Heroes Celebrity Baseball Game at Dr Pepper Ballpark in Frisco this Saturday night. Celebrity players include Cuban, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott and ex-Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant. More info can be found in the PaperCity event listing. The game is expected to be a sellout. As it should be.

This is Dirk’s town. He should have his own street, too.
