A compassionate crowd of Dallas folk flew and road-tripped to Austin's Moody Theater, home to Austin City Limits, in honor of Darrell K. Royal and the eponymous Alzheimer's research fund. A sold-out ensemble of 1,800 gathered for the 4th & Goal Gala chaired by Austin's Ava Late and Dallas' Rita Hortenstine, which honored the late University of Texas football coach who lost his battle with Alzheimer's last year. Seventy-five of his former players from National Championship teams honored him, as did longtime friends Willie Nelson, Larry Gatlin and Ray Benson, who performed a set of Royal's favorite songs. Remembering Darrell: Wife Edith Royal; Ben Crenshaw; Sandy and Tommy Rouse; the immensely involved J Frederick, founder of Spike Dykes golf tournament; Margaret Krasovac; Barry Davis; Jay Feingold; Bill Hall; Attorney General Greg Abbott; the late James Street; Jimmy and Carl Westcott; Connie and John Pearcy; Secretary of State John Steen; boundary-breaking Longhorn alum Julius Whittier; the honorable Janet Kafka with husband Terry; PaperCity's Kate Stukenberg; Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett; ex pro linebacker for the Broncos, Oilers and Giants Olen Underwood; fellow Oilers alum and Heisman winner Earl Campbell; and Michael Perrin.
