The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, took us to the ancient Near East for the opening of “The Cyrus Cylinder and Ancient Persia: A New Beginning.” Patrons welcomed the famed Cyrus Cylinder, on loan from the British Museum, which has possessed it since its discovery in 1879. The storied Babylonian artifact, its edicts written in cuneiform, is thought to be first bill of human rights to exist. Mad for Mesopotamia: Lead underwriters Shahla and Hushang Ansary; John Curtis, in from London on behalf of the British Museum; MFAH director Gary Tinterow; Sima Ladjevardian; Abolala Soudavar; Gail and Louis Adler; and MFAH exhibition curator Frances Marzio.
