Lonny's Trip to Texas

By Laurann ClaridgeMarch 29, 2010 Comments: 1

When my dear friend and Studio Communications PR wiz Gail Rubin called and told me that Lonny magazine (www.lonnymag.com), that new design webazine everyone is chattering about, had requested to shoot my home, I was beyond flattered. When she asked me if I could have it camera ready in eight days–panic set in.  All those updates I had planned to do over the next year or so, had...

I Feel Delightfully Mellowed

By Rob BrinkleyMarch 23, 2010 Comments: 0

Around here, we tend to toss around the words "patina," "pedigree" and whatnot, to mean that something has aged well, like a great house or a great old Rolls-Royce. So I loved stumbling on this term just now, on one of my favorite house blogs, Old Long Island: "delightfully mellowed." It's on a 1930s/1940s real-estate brochure for a mansion and 3,000 (!) acres on Centre Island, New York. "Delight...

Thanks to Dallas' out-of-nowhere wind, rain and snow (!) over the weekend — I can't sit still for a movie if it's sunny outside — some friends and I holed up at the Angelika to see The Ghost Writer. Hang the curvy plot, it was the beach house that had me riveted. Holy Herzog & de Meuron! I love a good modernist house in the movies, and this place takes the cake. It sits hunkered u...

Judy! Judy! Judy!

By Rob BrinkleyMarch 17, 2010 Comments: 0

One of my favorite Dallas decorators — the sassy, sharp-crackin' Beverly Field — always says she's "craaazy" about something when she really, really likes it. Well, I'm doing my best Beverly Field when I say I am craaazy for the colors of Judy Jackson's stoneware, brought to us by enlightened gents Jon and John of Haven in the West Village. The clay bottles and vases are handmade and ...

"He has an apartment with pure white walls and a living room with about 4,000 watts worth of R-30 spotlights encased in white cannisters [sic] suspended from ceiling tracks and a set of Corbusier bentwoods, which no one ever sits in because they catch you like a karate chop in the small of the back but which remain on the premises because they are in the permanent design collection of the Museum ...

On Vieux

By Laurann ClaridgeFebruary 08, 2010 Comments: 0

It looks like Vieux’s owner Marty Bratton, creative director Benton Lackey, manager DeWayne Formby have settled into their spanking new space at Timmons and West Alabama quite nicely. If you haven’t checked out their 7,000 square foot antiques and home accessories atelier yet, run there as quickly as you can. Twice the size of their former warehouse space in the Heights, design m...

France on Sale, and Italy, Too

By Rob BrinkleyFebruary 03, 2010 Comments: 0

It only happens once in a lune bleue, so point your Citroen to 1308 Slocum Street in the Design District, where decorator Jan Showers is having a red-tag moment — and only through this Friday. What's marked down? Murano glass lamps, French '40s chairs, an Aldo Tura bar cart, even a Jean Pascaud sofa. Can't promise the rarer bits will still be there by the time you see this, but you'll find ...

Today, I am Baron von Brinkley

By Rob BrinkleyJanuary 26, 2010 Comments: 1

This made the day. I was playing about on Smythson.com, dreaming of some creamy writing paper and note cards, and I decided to order a catalog. I clicked on the pull-down menu for "Title" (a title is a required field, by the way, which is why we love Smythson) and look what popped up — the best pull-down title menu on the planet. The British rock. I rest my case.

Droese Raney: We Knew Them When

By Rob BrinkleyJanuary 11, 2010 Comments: 0

Kudos and champagne clinks to Lance Raney and David Droese — the designers of our January feature house, in fact — who have been thrust into some very good company. Seems the gents' dapper New York store for menswear ace Billy Reid, above, has been singled out by Sportswear International Magazine as one of the "world's best new fashion stores" in its book Open: The Store Book, volume ...
