The new Addams Family musical
that’s being fine-tuned for Broadway is not a hard sell for me. I’ve loved the
TV series and cartoonist Charles Addams’ creations since afternoon repeats in
the ‘80s. And my show music collection is riddled with, shall we say, unusual
discs (death personified in Elisabeth; vampire tuners such
as Bernard J. Taylor’s Nosferatu, Possessed: The Dracula Musical and Jim
Steinman’s Tanz der Vampire; Broadway exes Young Frankenstein and Jekyll & Hyde; Canadian camp via the Evil Dead musical and incandescence à la Notre Dame de Paris; even the obscure Highlander: A Celtic Opera). So my ears perked up when I heard that gothic lovebirds Morticia and Gomez
were Broadway-bound, now in the guise of Bebe Neuwirth and Nathan Lane. Reviews
were mixed during the fall tryout at Chicago’s Oriental Theatre, but the
creative team has been busy as Grandmama with a new cauldron, stirring their
potion so it’s ready for its Broadway debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on April 8 (first preview, March
8).
The creative muscle behind this
Addams adaptation includes authors Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice (Jersey
Boys), choreographer Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys) and director/designers
Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter), as well as puppetry —
Thing and a man-eating plant, perhaps? — by Obie Award winner Basil Twist
(Arias With a Twist). Broadway stalwarts Neuwirth and Lane (who have
too many credits between them to list here) are joined on stage by Kevin Chamberlin (The
Ritz, Chicago, Dirty Blonde, My Favorite Year) as Uncle Fester, Zachary James (South
Pacific, The Toymaker, Coram Boy) as Lurch, Jackie Hoffman (Xanadu, Hairpray)
as Grandma [sic], Adam Riegler (Shrek The Musical) as Pugsley and Krysta
Rodriguez (In The Heights, Spring Awakening, Good Vibrations) as one-time PaperCity cover girl Wednesday. They’re
visited by “straights” Terrence Mann (Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast,
Cats, The Scarlet Pimpernel), Carolee Carmello (Mamma Mia!, Lestat, Urinetown,
The Scarlet Pimpernel) and Wesley Taylor (Rock of Ages) — the latter, a beau for the now-18-year-old Wednesday. Note: It’s a
formidable cast, as all credits listed here are for Broadway performances.
