This
week’s communiqué from my dear friend Billy Fong — DMA’s
former annual program director, now Atlanta High Museum of Art’s membership
manager, and composer of the most marvelous, style-drenched e-mails:
Dearest B,
So bored
and need a task. I have been working on a variety of projects — new
clothing line with a friend, a screenplay — but alas I need an immediate
fashion fix. Won’t you come visit me in Atlanta? That alone would
be enough to satiate me for a few months. I would buy my brilliant
photographer friend a case of beer to take lots of pics of us so that I could
build a whole album — something in an exotic skin — around the visit.
If I were
to build the story boards …
- Let’s begin at The Colonnade
Restaurant. You would be channeling Julianne Moore from the great scene in Savage
Grace where she
tears her husband apart, and is wearing that gorgeous pink floral dress.
For that Southern charm, you would pair it with a chic little wicker bag.
I would be in slim fitting seersucker pants with a monogrammed shirt and bucs —
my feeble attempt to channel Gregory Peck in To Kill a Mockingbird.
- For our
flea market/vintage shopping trip … think Jackie Kennedy in Greece. Flood-level
khakis with a nautical-style tee, all pulled together with a great Hermès vintage scarf. Tied around your head, of
course. Don't go with the expected oversized sunglasses. Instead, give a nod to
Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth and choose severe cat eyes. For me? I am seeing a
monochromatic look in shades of blue.
- For our G.N.O. with all your old
Hotlanta social friends, such as artist Carolyn Carr, we should start out with
pre-launch cocktails at my house and hire a driver for the eve. On to the
most piss-elegant current boite (perhaps the new Loews Hotel will be open?) and
then to a divey, hipster bar (the one below El Azteca? Or MJQ Concourse?).
We would finish the evening at Mary’s, where lots of gay boys can fawn over
you. This is the night for the big guns and you must bring something completely
unexpected — thinking a dominatrix leather catsuit finished off with a
cashmere cardigan and a Hermès Kelly bag.
Or, go with a long gown — I am hopeful that you can find an Oscar or Valentino
classic with lots of feathers.
What do
you think?
Missing
you terribly. Come soon!
XXX Billy
